Fees
The following provides an outline of my usual fee structure when I am appointed to act as an arbitrator.
I agree fees in advance, following an initial discussion about the nature and scope of the issues to be determined. As a guide, my typical fees are:
No VAT is payable.
What is included
Preparation, hearing and Award
The guideline fees above include preparation, attendance at the hearing and delivery of the written Award. The fee is based on the bundle for the hearing not exceeding one lever arch file (of approximately 350 pages). Additional bundles are charged at £500 each.
For hearings lasting more than two days, fees are agreed on a case-by-case basis.
Fee estimates are often requested before detailed information is available. For that reason, any initial indication is subject to confirmation once sufficient information has been provided.
The final fee will depend on a number of factors, including the issues to be determined, the volume and complexity of documentation, the likely extent of oral evidence and the location of the hearing.

Other points to note
Initial discussion before appointment
Before accepting an appointment, I will usually suggest a short telephone or video meeting, free of charge, with the parties’ legal representatives. This allows us to explore the scope of the arbitration, the issues to be determined and the likely timetable before the fee is confirmed. All fees are agreed before the arbitration commences.
Many procedural issues that arise can be dealt with by email, without any fee being charged. If a directions hearing is required, a separate fee may be charged depending on the issues to be determined. This will be agreed in advance.
The fees above are quoted on the basis that both parties are legally represented and that there are no separately represented third parties.
Hearings may take place in person or remotely, depending on the needs of the case. Where an in-person hearing is required, the parties are responsible for arranging and meeting the cost of any hearing venue, recording or transcription service. Reasonable travel and hotel expenses will be added to my fee where they are required for attendance at an in-person hearing.
Mediation Fees
As my role in mediation can vary significantly from case to case, fees for this type of engagement are assessed individually. Following discussion with the mediator and/or the solicitors involved, I will provide an indication of my fee reflecting the scope and requirements of the particular engagement.
